Although much has been written of the Ploegsteert (Plugstreet to the troops) links with Bruce Bairnsfather's 'Old Bill' and Winston Churchill plus its position on the southern slopes of the shoulder of the Messines Ridge, little has been documented of its importance during the earlier and mid-stages of the war. Generally spoken of as a quiet area, Plugstreet saw some of the most brutal and bitterly fought actions during the early years of the war.
