After a lifetime of working on the railways - as a fireman, on steam locomotives, and a driver, on diesel electrics - 78-year-old Bill Read has laid open his treasure trove of photographs in a volume that captures the dying days of steam on and off the line from York to Aberdeen. Bill spent many holidays travelling along the route with camera in hand and often riding as a pillion passenger on a mate's motorbike to reach the desired destination. No camera angle was too difficult or red tape too restricting for Bill to achieve his goal of capturing steam locomotives on film. Whilst approximately 220 black and white pictures were chosen from well over 1,000, the selection is a considered one and varied, showing many types of locomotive classes mainly from the station platform, line-side or on shed. Particularly interesting are the pictures where the long forgotten operational rituals and facilities associated with steam are to be seen. These include locomotive coal hoppers/coaling sheds and turntables.
Through his well composed pin sharp photographs Bill transmits an unparalleled enthusiasm for steam in all its glory and this is clearly evident for all to see in BR Steam York to Aberdeen. Bill's long-time friend and author Peter Tuffrey has also offered a helping hand with providing the text to accompany the pictures.
