The Indonesian confrontation against the newly Independent State of Malaysia started in 1963. The main military forces backing Malaysia being British. Initially their involvement was low key. However, the British responded to increased Indonesian activities by expanding their own, starting covert operations into Indonesian Kalimantan, predominantly by SAS troops, under the code name ‘Operation Claret’.

The confrontation was seen as an Undeclared War with most of the action occurring on the Indonesian and Borneo border areas. Australia and New Zealand deploying combat forces to Borneo in 1965.

The Hostilities were officially ended by the signing of a peace treaty in August 1966.
