It was Tommy Docherty who said: "I've had more clubs than Jack Nicklaus". Capped by Scotland 25 times during a playing career with Celtic, Preston and Arsenal, Docherty first moved into football management with Chelsea, where he assembled the rich dynasty of Venables, Hollins, Osgood, McCreadie, George Graham and others. He then joined Rotherham, cheerfully promising to take them out of the Second Division, which he did - into the Third. Brief spells with QPR, Aston Villa, Oporto and Hull City followed, before he was appointed team manager of Scotland. Next came Manchester United, whom he led to FA Cup triumph shortly before his dramatic sacking. This led to a further footballing odyssey that encompassed Derby County, QPR again, Sydney and Preston, before his career came to rest at the more modest Altrincham. Always controversial and seemingly irrepressible, Docherty is known for his ready quips and quotes, and is now in demand as an after-dinner speaker. This is his authorized biography.
