Two young people's worlds collide when they meet through an advertisement in the Personal Columns of The Times in 1858, sparking a maelstrom for Lizzy, an innocent housekeeper to a nefarious newspaper editor whom she marries in a bizzare ceremony in New York. Lizzy quickly makes the discovery she is married to the wrong man and when the couple return to London she finds the bewildering chain of events surrounding her life continue unabated. She is determined to escape but needs the valuable assistance of a private detective, though not without dramatic implications. Lizzy finally emerges from her miserable circumstances and falls in love with a doting Norwegian. However, much to her concern, she remains dogged by the guilt of her past.
