Seven years ago, the normally tranquil Isle of Jersey was shocked and horrified by the sudden disappearance of two of its most respected inhabitants, Nicholas and Elizabeth Newall. Last seen enjoying a birthday meal with their two adult sons Roderick and Mark at an exclusive local restaurant, three days later they were declared missing by neighbours. A thorough forensic test of the Newall's house showed that a strenuous cleansing exercise had done almost enough to eradicate any gory evidence of the owners fate. But not quite enough. Traces of blood were found near the fireside in the living room, and on the walls near the ceiling in the bedroom. lt was clear that a brutal slaying had taken place. The Bergerac Isle had its first real-life murder hunt. Faced with little real evidence, the police investigation was painfully slow. After two years, during which time Roderick and Mark had a court of law proclaim their parents dead so they could inherit their fortune, there remained one man determined to prove who killed the Newalls, and why. This book draws heavily on the diaries of Inspector Jim Adamson, the man who almost single-handedly trailed his suspects around the world.
From Scotland, the family home of the Newalls since the 18th century, through Europe following Mark Newall to Paris, and Brazil following Roderick on his round-the-world cruise, Adamson gathered crucial evidence against the brothers. At one point the case made legal history when Roderick became the first person ever to be arrested on board a British naval frigate at sea by members of the Jersey police force. Did the brothers kill for money, or was there a more disturbing motive?
