I received a copy of Doodled Dogs through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Doodled Dogs is a fun and quirky art guide by Gemma Correl. It is pretty much as the title indicates; a book on dog doodles. It has helpful tips, fun prompts, and funny comics. It’s a fast and fun read, with lots of projects included.
Some of the projects inside are one where the reader must complete the doodle themselves, or a quirky prompt or thought. They seem silly at first, but they do a great job of getting the reader to relax and have fun, and isn’t that the point of doodling?
The book also includes lots of images and comics by the author herself, which were a lot of fun. In some ways these were my favorite parts, and I found myself wishing at times that more of these had been included. They were so cute and fun!
If you’re a dog lover looking for a fun and relaxing art guide, then this is absolutely the book for you. You probably could enjoy this even if you didn’t love dogs…but loving dogs would certainly be a bonus in this case.

What a charming and whimsical book! My five-year-old son loves drawing, so I’ve taken to doodling along with him. One of his favorite things to draw is our family, complete with our dog, so I thought this would be the perfect book to try out with him.



The book is divided into four parts. The first part is full of quirky things like lists (including signs you’re a dog person – “Your pockets are full of poop pick-up bags”), dog facts, and a dog alphabet. It also has several pages of example dogs and dog faces, demonstrating different characteristics and emotions. The meat of the book is the 30-some pages in part 2 where you learn how to draw several species of dogs step by step (French bulldog, dachshund, bichon frise, greyhound, collie, and poodle). Part 3 experiments with hats, patterns (a tie-dye dog?), a series of anthropomorphic dogs (including Lucky the Lab Technician), dogs in costumes, dog houses, and dog toys. Part 4 is a series of templates of already drawn dogs for you to doodle on.



It’s super cute, and suitable for children as well as adults. My five-year-old got a kick out of drawing dogs with hats, and loved looking at all the various dog doodles. If you’re looking for lots of detailed step-by-step guides, I think you’d be disappointed. Instead, it kickstarted our imaginations (astronaut dog! alien dog!) and provided a fun afternoon full of giggles and doodles. I think this would make a super cute gift for any fan of dogs and drawing!

Doodled Dogs is a doodled notebook and collection of very informal lighthearted exercises for the would be dog-doodler. The majority of the book content is very simple line drawings of dogs in all sorts of situations, including anthropomorphized and alliteratively named dogs going about their lives as waiters, superheroes and artists.

It's 160 pages, published by Quarto - Walter Foster, with a due date 26th June, 2018 and available in hardback format. The measurements are 6"x7" which means it will fit easily into a purse or backpack. The author, Gemma Correll, is well known for her quirky offbeat drawings and has published a number of books about her pets and life.

For people who are seriously wishing to get some deep insights and directed lessons about doodling dogs, this is probably not your book. There is very little tutorial here. There are some short step by step tutorials, but they make up roughly 15% of the content; the rest is made up of finished drawings.

This book is appropriate for all audiences and would appeal to younger artists especially.

Charming, whimsical, witty and simply drawn.
