The protozoa are a diverse group of organisms. They are used as a medium for teaching biology and microscopy, as models for cytological, evolutionary and ecological principle, as biological indicators in environmental studies, and as organisms for study in their own right. Seeking to act as an aid in teaching and as a research and reference tool for the student and professional scientist, this guide incorporates an easy-to-use key to make the identification of protozoa accessible and clear. Linking over 230 photographs showing what can actually be seen down the microscope with 500 specially prepared line drawings, the book shows the reader the key points of identification. Communities of protozoa are illustrated in a separate chapter and covers a range of environments, from water purification systems, sewage works, anoxic and benthic communities, to those found in polluted environments. Information is given on the significance of these communities as "biological indicators" of contamination and pollution.
