Up and Down the Real Australia is the second published collection of short works by Arthur Upfield. Kees de Hoog has selected 45 anecdotes and autobiographical articles about the 20 years from 1911 when Upfield first arrived in Australia. They cover his life and work in the outback, and his First World War service at Gallipoli and the Somme. It includes The Murchison Murders, Upfield's account of how the "perfect murder" was developed for his second Bony novel, The Sands of Windee; how Snowy Rowles used it to commit at least one, probably three, murders in 1929; how the crime was solved; and what happened at Rowles' trial in 1932.
