A study of the counter-culture in Britain from 1966-73, discussing the atmosphere out of which the counter-culture grew: teddy boys, mods and rockers, the anti-bomb movement and the emergence of "youth" and its music and culture. The underground press forms the focus of an examination of the aspirations of the counter-culturalists, as it was there that their social history was recorded. The sexual, musical, political and utopian concerns of "International Times", "Oz", "Friends" and other magazines are examined. The author also discusses the failure of the counter-culture to achieve its aims and assesses its significance.
