While the author is clearly talented at writing, I found myself so offset with the characters in Protector that it was difficult for me to get into the story. Detective Perry, the story's main character, suffered though a childhood with an abusive father and a mother that passed away early on of cancer. As an adult Jane Perry turns out to be a chain-smoking alcoholic with a foul mouth. After getting caught drinking and driving by her boss, I feel like she wouldn't have a job, much less be entrusted to care for a child whom she has never met before. After I got over the unbelievable characters, I did find the book to be a bit enjoyable, though very predictable. All in all, an okay read for a free nook book.
