Regional problems are commonplace in all societies, whether rooted in the processes of uneven economic development or socio-cultural divides. This text unravels the origins of the regional question. It does this first by examining the economic processes underlying unequal development and secondly by looking at the inter-relationships between the development of the state, nationalism and the region. Based on examples drawn from rich and poor countries, the book proceeds to examine the changing nature and significance of regionalism within the wider processes of development and the responses of the state towards it. The authors conclude that not only will regionalism persist but that it will become, in many countries, a more divisive political force.
