Because energy requires a high percentage of utilities operating costs, that practices outlined in this study should help reduce those costs. The 24 participating utilities have all achieved significant savings with their improved energy management practices. The study identifies common areas where opportunities exist for money savings, provides 'best practices' along with case studies, discusses management teams, self-assessment surveys, preparation of an energy program and implementation plans. Energy supply management and procurement practices were found to be a key factor in reducing costs.
