The pioneer photographers had to come to terms with the human figure and find ways of making portraits. The collections in the Musee d'Orsay give a fairly accurate picture of the developments in international photography from 1850 to 1915 and show how photographers from Nadar to Stieglitz used light - "nature's paintbrush" - to bring out the personality of the sitter.
