This text offers a conceptual model of management - as responsibility for the quality of subordinates' work - and identifies the constituent skills necessary for the effective management of others' performance. The author suggests a new and radical conception of managerial work and what is required for managers to develop the requisite skills. His view of management is based on management learning. He offers models of how people learn and how to help others learn. He also suggests that, for most managers, the key skills of management are not only difficult, they are actually counter to their normal working habits. They have frequently been trained, he argues, to be incompetent. Accordingly, Salaman provides practical suggestions to help managers develop appropriate management skills.
