Born and raised in a Dallas suburb, Doak Walker cemented his title as a Texas Legend when he won the Heismann, the Maxwell and was named an All-American three times during his years at Southern Methodist University. His achievement is all the more amazing when one considers that he took time out after his freshman year to perform military service in 1946 and then returned to SMU to put in three more seasons for the Mustangs. After his college days, Walker continued to play football successfully as a running back for the Detroit Lions.
