Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Lutheran theologian, was born in Germany in 1906 and was one of the greatest pioneers of the ecumenical movement. However, he is probably best known for his opposition to the Nazis through the Confessing Church and for his involvement in a plot to assassinate Hitler. Bonhoeffer was arrested in 1943 and executed shortly before the end of World War II. This collection of some of his writings gives a good oversight of Bonhoeffer's theology: his struggle with the power of the Church, his concern over "costly" grace and discipleship and his Christ-centered community. Material is included from the three famous English anthologies of Bonhoeffer's writings, "No Rusty Swords", "The Way to Freedom" and "True Patriotism".
