This special issue of Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly (APAQ), titled "Disability Sport, Classification, and Sport/Leisure Learning," explores the theoretical richness of research on sport participation by individuals with disabilities.Claudine Sherrill, a professor at Texas Woman's University at Denton, proposes a conceptual framework that could be helpful in organizing the growing research base of disability sport and guiding further research. While most research is done in an effort to develop a theory, Sherrill suggests several theories that could be used to guide disability sport. These theories include participation, classification, performance, and communication.- Participation research would be organized under the constructs of who, when, where, what, and how. For instance, when might focus on variables affecting optimal times for recruitment from sport.- The disability sport classification theory's basic goal would be to ensure that winning or losing an event depends on talent, training, skills, and fitness rather than on unevenness among disability-related variables.- Performance theory pertains to explaining or predicting phenomena such as winning and losing, achieving a personal best, managing injury, and other such events.- Communication theory pertains to ways of expressing beliefs, perceptions, attitudes, intentions, and actions in relation to disability sport.Related articles in this special issue include discussion of the parameters of these proposed theories as well as related practices.
