The Institute's 75th anniversary is the occasion for this compendium of 120 works from the museum's distinguished collection of American art. An interpretative essay accompanies each fully illustrated work. Featured artists constitute a broad spectrum from the colonial period on, among them Gilbert Stuart, Martin Johnson Heade, Mary Cassat and Maurice Prendergast. Works of mid-20th-century artists such as Robert Motherwell, Josef Albers and Fairfield Porter precede later works by Philip Pearlstein, Jack Beal and others. An unusual feature of the collection is a small but important group of works by African-American artists.
