Kenya: The Evolution of Independence is a historical narrative, based largely on secondary sources, of Western influences on a primitive East Africa which, thanks principally to the building of a railway from Mombasa, eventually transformed Kenya into a modern country. The arrival of missionaries, followed by settlers and subsequent colonisation, created a society the economic development of which was unmatched by African political and social advancement. Whether Mau Mau impeded or promoted the inevitability of independence is also considered.
