The present book happens to be the middle volume in her utopian trilogy. The other books in the trilogy are "Moving the Mountain" and "With Her in Ourland."

That utopian society has a perfect and ideal social order. The society is free of conflicts, war, and domination. The book was first presented as a serial in The Forerunner, a magazine that was edited and written by Gilman between 1909 and 1916.

The tradition of utopian fiction stretches all the way back to Plato's `The Republic.' The present novel also follows that long tradition of utopian fiction.
