There But for Fortune tells the story of David Mills, the former Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday and Darlington forward. Making his first senior appearance for Middlesbrough in 1969, David went on to be one of the top players in the Football League resulting in West Bromwich Albion paying a transfer fee of GBP516,000 to sign him in 1979 - a British record at the time. However, injuries and other factors limited his appearances at West Brom and in 1983 he moved to Sheffield Wednesday before heading back to the North East to join Newcastle United. Written with football writer David Bond, David Mills details the good and the bad times in his career and recounts working with some of the most famous people in football - Jack Charlton, Kevin Keegan, Sir Bobby Robson, Ruud Gullit and Kenny Dalglish to name just a few. There But for Fortune also tells of a major personal tragedy following an horrific car crash which devastated David and his family.
