Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666), more commonly known as Guercino, was one of the most prolific and celebrated artists of his time. Essentially self-taught, he was profoundly influenced by the Carraci-the brothers Annibale and Agostino, and their cousin Ludovico-who initiated a reform of painting to replace what was considered stale, contrived mannerism with a sense of naturalism.
