The difficulties of mastering urban projects are visible all over Europe. Through case studies, this book identifies the errors of many planning and design projects of recent decades and proposes three main strategies for future change: the development of more interdisciplinary tools for analysis and action; analysing how political and economic interests, and the opinions of city dwellers, can be incorporated into the decision-making process; and, ensuring projects are adaptable to change through time, since a typical aspect of today's urban projects is that they span long time periods. The authors state that new ways of producing urban projects require new professional attitudes and substantial change in the traditional role of engineers, architects, or planners in the conception and implementation of operations.
