In 1893 hundreds of German-speaking Mennonites (many of them Russian immigrants) joined the land rush into Oklahoma's Cherokee Outlet and established a life-style of work, thrift, and self-denial. Sharon Hartin Iorio chronicles the transition of these people and their descendants into mainstream America.

From historical records, personal narratives, and ethnographic study, Iorio reveals the Mennonite story from the point of view of those who lived it -- particularly the grandchildren and children of the pioneers. These twentieth-century innovators made significant contributions in developing winter wheat and large-scale farms on the Great Plains, but experienced widespread intolerance of their pacifism and their German heritage during the two world wars.
