Ganzl and Lamb have written a guide to such light musical theatre genres as opera-comique, operetta, the musical comedy and the comic opera. Their book is a companion to "Kobbe's Complete Opera Book" and presents summaries of the libretti and songs of some 300 of the best and most popular musical shows from the contemporary and bygone repertoires of the English, French, German and Hungarian language stages. "Les Miserables", "Chess", "The Beggar's Opera" and "Robin Hood" are included. There are historical notes on the various traditions of the musical theatre and details of the principal productions of the shows discussed. An index of song titles provides a ready means of placing a song in its original context, and an appendix of recorded music gives the armchair listener easy access to the scores. Kurt Ganzl also wrote "The British Musical Theatre" which was awarded the Roger Machell Prize as best book on the performing arts in 1986. Andrew Lamb has written "Jerome Kern in Edwardian London".
