Identifying exchange and relating it to the political control exercised by late pre-historic social elites is the focus of this study. By combining data from archaeology, ethnography and geochemistry, the author demonstrates the social and economic factors that influenced obsidian projectile point exchange in California. This book builds on previous studies of trade networks to provide new insights on exchange and social relations, as well as on ethnicity and the complexity of hunter-gatherer life in pre-history.
