Taken from a series which is an easy-reader version of the "Discovering Nature" series, this book looks at snakes and lizards. It describes the many different kinds of snakes and lizards in the world - what they look like, where they live, what they eat and how they look after their young. This book starts with an explanation of the origin of snakes and lizards, in which the author describes the similarities and differences between them. He then describes the different places in the world that they live - in tropical rain forests, in deserts, and in the case of sea snakes and marine iguanas, in the sea. It describes how they catch their prey and eat it, in the case of snakes using their sense of smell to hunt. It examines the reproduction of snakes and lizards, and the reader is introduced to the idea that both these reptiles lay eggs. Enemies of these creatures, and the role of camouflage and warning coloration, are looked at before the book ends by discussing conservation, and how some snakes and lizards may be kept as pets.
Ann Smith is headteacher of a Welsh primary school, and has written several other books, including "Frogs and Toads", and "Rabbits and Hares" in the "Nature Study" series.
