'Rambling around Tudeley' is an exploration of the parish of Tudeley-cum-Capel in West Kent. It was written in 1987, a time when there was much pessimism about the state of the English countryside. In that year, author Matthew Wells set about exploring his home parish, to see if such pessimism was justified in the countryside that surrounded his home. Happily he discovered that, in many respects, Tudeley was still the 'obscure and unfrequented place' described by the famous Kent historian, Edward Hasted in 1798. The book includes detailed descriptions of 11 walks around the parish and looks at the history of the area, including such landmarks as Somerhill House, All Saints Tudeley and St Thomas a'Beckett Capel. The book is complemented with 23 black and white photos taken during the year and a map of each of the walks described (by kind permission of Capel Path Rangers).
