D.C. Jack Benin transferred to the small town of Foxdown to get away from the constant crime and violence of Leeds. He meets, and falls in love with Kim, a very wealthy young woman.
He is called upon to investigate the murder of a loathsome antique dealer. There he meets D.I. Mason, an old corrupt enemy of his from Leeds, who takes over the investigation.
Mason seems like a changed man and is well a respected and admired Police Officer.
The two Policemen bury the hatchet and seem to work together well. But Mason harbors a deep down hatred for Jack, and plans a fatal revenge.
