This book is one of the products of the PRIME (Primary Initiatives in Mathematics Education) project. Over 100 teachers were involved in the project and the materials were extensively trialled in many classrooms. These resources are designed to help in implementing the national curriculum and Scotland's curriculum and assessment policy. They also aim to encourage teachers develop their thinking and understanding about mathematics, its learning and teaching; use a broad range of teaching styles as urged in the Cockcroft report; and take account of new technology in teaching mathematics. Part of the PRIME project was devoted to the development of a mathematics curriculum based on calculator awareness. The development and outcome of this work - the CAN (Calculator-Aware Number) curriculum - are described in this book. The book is augmented by a video showing the variety of activities in CAN classrooms. The childrens work featured includes place value, large numbers, decimals, mental calculation, children's own algorithms and games. The teacher's role is discussed with reference to teaching styles, headteachers and school commitment, advisory teachers and the need for support.
