During the period 1945-1990, East Germany was a communist state. Christian response varied from outright opposition to total co-operation, and everything in between. The term that has most often been used to describe it is "critical solidarity". The Christian churches were at the forefront of the movement to liberate East Germany from communist rule. Paul Oestreicher tells what the communists tried to achieve in the East German state, and how the churches responded. His account is not, however, merely historical. It is based upon interviews with a wide number of communists and Christians, who recount their own experiences, and key events and individuals.
