In this book the author argues that Ireland's economic problems are perfectly soluble. But the cost of the solutions will be high. Cathal Guiomard maintains that there is only one choice in Irish economics - to pay the price of unemployment or to pay for its solution. That will involve the abandonment of many old, cherished ways via modernization. The reforms, argues the author, will have to go far beyond economic policy, to address inherent features of Irish culture. This book scans Irish economic development - especially after 1970 - to find the reasons for underperformance. It argues that a too large a role was given to the state which, overstretched, was unable to carry out properly those functions on which it should have concentrated.
