In order to characterize the effect of water disinfectants on oocysts and cysts, the study first had to establish the mode of action on each disinfectant when applied individually, as sufficient information was not available. Both oocysts and cysts were exposed to ozone, to chlorine and sequentially to both. Exposure to both reduced oo/cyst viability, infectivity, and produced changes in the external structures. Exposure to ozone also resulted in reduction in cyst numbers.
