Filamentous fungi were assessed based on taste and odor problems as reported by the utilities surveyed. Molecular techniques were employed with findings that suggest fungi are capable of establishing active populations within distribution systems. Results also shows better removal of fungi was achieved by filtration vs. clarification, and the most effective disinfectants were chlorine dioxide and ozone, with performance influenced by temperature. The study suggests water utilities have little expertise with fungi and should consider them an issue when localized taste and odor problems occur.
