The security of the Mediterranean region is of major significance not only to the littoral States but to Europe and to the world at large. As NATO's southern flank the region is an important potential theatre for East-West confrontation both on land and at sea. This is a compilation of the papers presented at the September 1987 Conference of the International Institute for Strategic Studies which analyzed the issues affecting security in the Mediterranean and their policy implications. The topics discussed included the strained relations between Greece and Turkey who are part of the Alliance and also its enhanced strength through the accession of Spain, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the presence of Libya and the countries of the Maghreb which present uncertain stability and terrorism, since much of that experienced in Europe emanates from this region.
