As an interior decorator I work in many different countries and each time I start a new project I cram suitcases full of fabric swatches to show my clients but with the curtain and fabric selector I need only pack my metal ruler, a few basic fabrics and paint charts and a copy of the new book. I have selected 700 fabrics and I hope I have covered every room from country kitchens to formal living rooms. The fabrics' chosen can be found in most countries. The curtain and blind designs tend to be simple lines and will look equally good in plain fabrics or flamboyant floral prints, all you have to do is to pick your own combination from my suggestions. I personally prefer plain curtains but every so often a room cries out for bright bold prints. Don't be scared to make a statement it can be quite refreshing! But remember, if you decide on a large flamboyant wallpaper say on one wall, to keep the curtain fabric plain and perhaps bring the colours of the wallpaper into the room with other soft furnishings to tie it altogether. I am not trying to influence you at all in this book but just to guide you through the maze of possible pitfalls when selecting fabrics and designs for your window treatments, I think it's because these days there is so much choice that in the end you can find your are totally confused and off the whole idea of curtains anyway! Try to choose fabrics that suit your lifestyle, your home is where you can relax as well as entertain your friends. Remember there is no need to have something in your home just because it's 'in fashion' or that will be' one up 'on the neighbours'. It's a costly exercise anyway and if you are not careful you will end up with a completely sterile environment which doesn't work for you and is ultimately just a lifeless space! So if you are trying to create a home that is right for you and your family then my advice is to follow all the usual rules, being sure to add a few of your own, and stick to them but really it's when you add your personal 'clutter' at the end that really makes it home. 600 photographs and 150 B/W Illustrations
