This book describes the eighty-three days of the British Third Army's relentless advance over old battlefields from its start line on the Somme on 20 August 1918 to its final position at the armistice at the town of Hautmont on the river Sambre, a distance of about sixty miles. Reference is made to the flanking British armies. A million lives had already been lost on these battlefields that the Third Army now sought to retake. The history, the tactics and the movements of the major formations in the battles is described in detail for both sides. The book covers the German units, casualties and problems as they were driven backwards to final defeat. The reader follows the advance by means of eight separate tours and suggestions on accommodation and places of interest to visit are provided. Photographs and maps are included and individual actions from the advance are described in detail.
