This important new book critically analyses the indicators that are commonly used to measure the position of women in society. It concludes that many of them are ambiguous and misleading. Increased participation by women in the labour force is not necessarily advantageous for women as is commonly argued. Indeed there is wealth of evidence that women with outside jobs generally have harder lives than those who do not work outside the home.

Dr Papps examines the evidence within the framework of modern economic theory. She shows that most of the common indicators are outcomes of a complex set of choices made under various constraints and argues that it is not these outcomes which indicate the position of women but the conditions which constrain the choice. This analysis has radical implications for policy aimed at changing particular indicators.
