Toibin’s unusual and provocative memory play manages to be both serious and hilarious in its depiction of The Plough riots, an event that not only tested the cultural, political and artistic freedoms of the nascent Irish State but also of the Abbey Theatre itself. Beauty in a Broken Place premiered at the Peacock Theatre, Dublin, in August 2004 as part of abbeyonehundred, the Abbey Theatre’s centenary celebrations.
