The ever-increasing demand for food from the world's growing population necessitates greater sophistication and intensification of agricultural practices worldwide, but particularly in developing countries. The importance of pest management in these processes has been well recognized, but there is increasing concern about the over-use of pesticides, which has lead to undesirable side-effects such as deterioration of the environment, hazards to human health and the development of pest resistance. Interest in Integrated Pest Management has therefore grown steadily over recent years. This study is based on papers presented at a seminar held in Kuala Lumpur in May 1991, the objective of which was to assess the issues, dangers, trends and possible solutions in pest management today and into the next century. Some chapters focus on Malaysia, while others are relevant worldwide. The book, written by international experts, will therefore appeal to a wide range of research workers, policy makers and others concerned with crop protection and agricultural productivity.
