This work is the result of extensive empirical research into the economy of the Republic of Ireland. It is concerned to determine whether and to what extent Irish culture has impacted on the development of Irish capitalism, and thus on the economic development of that country. The explanatory focus of the text lies in cultural meanings - it aims to ease out the meanings with which actors endow economic activity, and to show how salient features of the culture through which these meanings are structured influence the nature, extent and intensity of actors' economic engagements and so react on the character of Irish capitalism and the level of Irish economic development.
