Dr. Robert Lucky, Corporate Vice President of Applied Research at Bellcore, discusses the current state of the telecommunications industry and its impact on future technological advances. In this light-hearted presentation, Dr. Lucky tries to make sense of the industry in the 1990s, contemplating the ideal situation of running optical fiber to every home. The dilemma, says Lucky, is that in order to achieve broadband access, you need a fiber to your home ... but you can't have one. Just when the industry seemed to have a reasonable evolutionary path to wiring the nation's homes, it was caught up in the turbulence of mega-deals, the expansion of the Internet, the waning of interest in video-on-demand and the battle cry of competition. According to lucky, economics, the market and technology intertwine in a patchwork quilt of access alternatives that no longer seem to have a direction or theme.
