In 1638 the Scottish nation bound itself in the National Covenant to defend the Scottish Reformation from the authoritarian and insensitive reforms attempted by Charles I. While the signing of the Covenant in 1638 has traditionally been seen as a turning point in Scottish history, this study takes a wider view and argues that the Covenant had a tremendous impact upon the formation of the British state. Eight international historians re-examine the origins, nature and development of the Covenant in its early formative years. Separate chapters evaluate the theological, political, social and military aspects of the signing. The book argues that the framers of the Covenant drew inspiration from ideas outside of Scotland and that the defence of the Covenant had a profound effect upon Anglo-Scottish, Irish-Scottish and British history.
