This book focuses on particular instruments from around the world and aims to involve pupils in active music-making and composition. It explores through listening, writing, discussion and practical projects, the musical cultures which the instruments represent. Instructions are given on how to make the instruments from everyday familiar materials, and how to play pieces using them. Each chapter contains a listening component which explains how well-known composers such as Debussy, Britten and the Beatles have used ideas from outside their own musical cultures to create pieces which have become popular with western audiences. It is designed to be suitable for pupils of all abilities. This is a Cambridge University Press publication from July, 1995.
