As well as providing examples of materials produced by parents and teachers to support family activities in the study of history, this book offers a range of ideas designed to help teachers and parents to work together and develop children's skills in and understanding of history. The premise behind the book is that parents, particularly of younger children, can take a significant role in developing their children's understanding of history if the aims of the history curriculum are explained to them, alongside ideas for taking advantage of family occasions and activities. Four main themes are presented: opportunities for historical investigation in the family and at home; developing historical understanding and knowledge through reading stories; looking at buildings, especially the sometimes unspectacular ones common to most communities; and visiting museums and heritage centres and knowing what to look at and what questions to ask.
