The Stefaneschi Polyptych, Giotto's masterpiece conserved in the Vatican Picture Gallery, is the focus of this volume.

The loan to the Palazzo Reale of Milan for the exhibition Giotto and Italy, held from September 2015 to January 2016, provided an opportunity to carry out new and more complete studies of the work, carefully compiled and illustrated here.

This extensive monograph is characterised by a complex plurality of approaches. Indeed, the most evolved techniques of scientific research are side-by-side with art-historical analyses based on archives consultation, along with new reflections regarding events in the history of its execution, exhibition and conservation. The themes considered, accompanied by detailed photographic illustrations, include the selection criteria for research methods and the relative results; iconographic description and that of the construction and painting techniques; an account of the restoration works of the 1930s and 1970s; and finally, the creation of a permanent protection system.

The book ends with a notable series of colour plates of the Polyptych and an appendix with the graphic reproduction of all the haloes, a virtual reconstruction of the work and its original position in St. Peter's Basilica, and an extract from the historic report on the 1970s restoration
