Designed to provide staff at all levels with a thorough grounding in the principles of occupational safety, in line with the knowledge requirements of Health and Safety NVQs. Whilst both authors hold a legal qualification, they are also experienced trainers and their prime concern is to encourage participants to become aware of safety - and of the legal requirements - and to follow best safety practice in their work. Starting from the induction level, the sessions progress through risk assessment, organizing for safety, communicating the safety message and auditing safety to the practical application of the Health and Safety at Work Act. The manual contains comprehensive general guidance for the trainer and each of the 17 sessions includes detailed notes on preparation and running the session, together with visual aids and handouts. The emphasis is on the application of safety principles for the individual and the environment in which he or she works. This is achieved through discussion and individual group tasks. The appendix provides a summary of the legal framework and a test on each workshop which can be used to measure prior and/or acquired knowledge or competence.
