A new generation of artists emerged in 1980s China and they insisted on sweeping aside the curtain of secrecy surrounding their country. Award-wining photographer Xing Danwen is part of this generation. Over the course of more than twenty years she has contemplated the seismic transformations in Chinese culture and society and has projected those realities in her lens-based conceptual practice. At once deeply personal and political, Xing's richly varied photographs touch upon issues such as socio-cultural dislocation, tensions between globalization and tradition, environmental disasters and unbridled development, and the disconnection between desire and reality that typically suffuses urban life.
