We re-discovered this delightful gem whilst researching the remarkable story of Heffers of Cambridge. For much of the twentieth century the firm was not just a celebrated bookseller `known all over the world' but also a publisher. And as with bookselling, its approach to publishing was avant-garde and idiosyncratic, with the release of many curious, or even bizarre, titles.
Although as a useful book of instruction it sold very well in its time, copies of Don'ts for Choirmasters are now scarce. So we were pleased to track one down. Discovering its endearing qualities, we showed it to friends who had been choristers. They loved it and insisted that the book is not only entertaining but still very pertinent to choir leaders and their choirs everywhere, even today. We were urged to share it.
